Veteran Prevails in ‘Time of Crisis’

'The grant helped cover expenses related to the high cost of living in Austin, which was especially helpful since I just moved here'

Veteran Jonathan Rice, 26, was born in Kolkata, India. As a dual citizen and the son of missionary parents, he grew up in both the United States and India.

When he came of age, Rice decided to enlist in the Marine Corps, following a family tradition of service.

Marine Corps veteran Jonathan RiceFor just over a year, Rice served at Cherry Point, North Carolina, where he sustained a number of physical and psychological wounds.

“I suffer from tinnitus and injuries to my lower back and both knees and ankles,” he said.

As a result of several hazing incidents and sexual assaults, Rice also suffers from post-traumatic stress and military sexual trauma.

Following his recent move to Austin, Texas, Rice searched online for financial assistance and came across the VFW’s Unmet Needs program.

“The application process was smooth and straightforward,” he recalled. “The grant helped cover expenses related to the high cost of living in Austin, which was especially helpful since I just moved here.”

As Rice continues to adjust to his new home, he is grateful for the support.

“I would like to thank those who facilitated my financial assistance and helped me during a time of crisis,” he said. “If anyone wants to donate to the VFW, please do so! Veterans need your support!”
