113th VFW National Convention Summary

The 113th VFW National Convention was held July 21-25, 2012 in "The Biggest Little City in the World," Reno, Nev. This year's location offered a world-class tourist destination with its rich arts scene and year-round outdoor activities. Located a comfortable 4,400 feet above sea level, and averaging over 300 sunny days each year, Reno was a choice location for the VFW National Convention.

This year, delegates to the convention were addressed by President Barack Obama who reminded delegates of his track record of keeping the promises he made to veterans and the military during his candidacy and his presidency. Presidential nominee hopeful, Gov. Mitt Romney also addressed convention delegates, focusing much of his remarks on challanging the Presidents record.

Also, at this year's convention, Army Gen. Raymond Odierno, chief of staff of the U.S. Army, received VFW’s Eisenhower Award. War correspondent Joe Galloway received VFW’s Americanism Award for his reporting over the past 50 years and Dr. James T. Averhart, Jr., national president of the Montford Point Marine Association, accepted the Commander-in-Chief Gold Medal of Merit on behalf of that organization.

On Wednesday, Vietnam Veteran John E. Hamilton was elected as VFW Commander-in-Chief. Also elected were Bill Thien as Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief, and John Stroud,as Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief.
