VFW DISPATCH – May 2016

h_border

For the VFW, May is one of the most important months on the calendar. It’s time we spend focusing on mental health awareness, military appreciation and the approaching, ever-important Memorial Day.

As veterans, we understand better than most the true meaning of Memorial Day. It’s not the start of summer or a day to “celebrate” by shopping or hosting parties. As the small percentage of American’s who have proudly worn our nation’s uniform, we recognize the true magnitude of the accomplishments of our fallen brothers and sisters in arms.

Now, honor-bound to uphold our sacred duty to preserve their legacy, it remains our charge to never let America forget the sacrifice of so many. This Memorial Day we join you in saluting those who’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, and we encourage you to take some time to remind your friends and family members what this holiday is truly about.

Respectfully,

In a recent Military Times special op-ed penned by VFW National Commander Biedrzycki and James R. Sweeney II, the two veterans call attention to the pitfalls of the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act – which created the blended military retirement system – and how bad it really is for America’s troops.
