‘I’ve Always Been a Public Servant’

Gayla Sue Mendez is a veteran #StillServing with VFW Post 6073 out of Scottsboro, Alabama. Mendez serves as her Post’s public affairs officer, writing articles about local veterans and veteran-related activities happening around Scottsboro.

VFW member Gayla Sue Mendez is #StillServingIn addition to her work at the Post, Mendez serves as board secretary for Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County where she guides tours of the park and educates students on proper flag etiquette. 

She’s also heavily involved with her church, representing the southeast district of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, where she acts as chairperson for its Commission for Archive and History.

“I’ve been a public servant my entire life,” Mendez said. “And I always will be. The opportunity to serve alongside my fellow veterans at the VFW has been a phenomenal boost to my morale and healing.”
