Following a successful 4-year military career, which included time as a medical responder, Seth Atchison realized he wanted to become a physician.
He took full advantage of his GI Bill benefits, but exhausted them while completing his undergraduate degree. To complete eight years of medical school at the University of Kansas (KU), he would be forced to rely mostly on student loans to cover the cost. The debt Seth would incur was overwhelming.
Then KU’s veteran liaison emailed him about the new VFW “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship.” Seth applied for the scholarship, but kept his expectations low.
A couple of months later Seth received a letter from the VFW. He was stunned to read he was a recipient of a $5,000 VFW “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship,” one of 43 total scholarships awarded that semester.
“As a medical student, we encounter a shocking amount of debt by the time we finally graduate eight years after beginning college,” explained Seth. “This scholarship has added quite a bit of help to that burden and relieved some of the anxiety.”
Seth is now able to focus more on his schoolwork, and not worry so much about the financial burdens of completing medical school.
