U.S. District Judge Larry Burns has ordered that the 43-foot cross atop Mount Soledad in southern California be removed within the next 90 days. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States strongly disagrees with the ruling, and aside from supporting an appeal, is now suggesting a possible solution that is more inclusive of all beliefs.
The VFW invites all faiths to install a monument of their own on Mount Soledad. This would resolve the current dispute and recognize the service and sacrifice of military men and women from all backgrounds,
“We understand political reality and religious sensitivities,” said VFW National Commander William A. Thien, “and if the Department of Veterans Affairs can recognize almost five dozen religious faiths for veterans’ headstones, then so should we all.”
