As Hurricane Sandy set its sights on the eastern seaboard, VFW knew that many of its members would be impacted by this devastating storm and would be in dire need of assistance.
We asked all patriotic Americans to join with our VFW Departments, Districts, Posts and members, and donate to VFW’s Hurricane Sandy Fund.
You came through! To date, you’ve helped us raise over $155,000 for VFW members affected by Sandy. Because of your generosity, we were able to provide rapid relief to those hit hardest by the storm, some of whom lost everything.
VFW support extended well beyond our national fundraising efforts. Several VFW Posts stepped up in the face of this catastrophe, offering food and shelter and collecting donated goods for those hit by the storm.
VFW Post 5796 in Kings Park, N.Y., was one of them. Soon after the storm hit, Post members worked with community organizers and opened the Post’s doors to serve a hot meal to about 150 area residents left without power. The Post also collected clothing, blankets, batteries and non-perishable goods.
Post 7279 in Lindenhurst, N.Y., also lent a helping hand. This area was one of the hardest hit, with many losing everything they had. Post 7279 collected items such as clothing and food and was there to distribute desperately needed supplies.
Both of these Posts clearly demonstrated the VFW spirit by their dedication to serving their communities’ needs.
