KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The VFW kicked off the 2009 NASCAR season by hosting the Wounded Warrior Transition Battalion from Ft. Benning, Ga., for the first Troop Support hospitality event of the race season. The troops were VIP guests at the American Commercial Lines 200 in Atlanta, Ga., courtesy of the VFW. The 50 troops received a tour of the speedway’s garages and VFW driver Ron Hornaday paid the soldiers a visit in the FedEx suite. Hornaday talked with the troops before they watched the No. 33 truck as well as two other Kevin Harvick, Inc. teams contend for the first place points.
“Ron is open and down to earth about racing, which I really think the troops relate to. And, with Kevin Harvick entering three teams in the truck race on Saturday, it really shows his commitment to NASCAR, which makes us proud to be partnered with this particular team,” said Mike Penney, Director of VFW National Military Services.
Hornaday and the No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)/Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Chevrolet team, recorded a seventh-place finish in the race, moving the team up one position in the point standings to fourth.
On April 7, 2009, Kevin Harvick and Ron Hornaday, joined by VFW National Commander Glen Gardner, will visit Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Washington D.C.
”There is no way to repay these great Americans for all they have done to protect our way of life,” said Kevin Harvick. “I am honored to have the opportunity to thank them in person.”
