Years ago, while working as a firefighter in Rockford, Illinois, Tom Dummer became intrigued by the ideas in a novel he read between dispatches, titled It’s Your Ship by Capt. D. Michael Abrashoff.
The novel stresses the importance of building trust by taking the time and effort to listen to colleagues. By trying to incorporate their values and visions into the overall mission, it results in higher retention.
Now, serving as Commander of Post 11019 in South Beloit, Illinois, Dummer is accredited with helping to dramatically increase membership.
“When Tom Dummer stepped into his role as Post Commander in November 2024, he didn’t just accept a title, he accepted a challenge,” Post member Rob McClain said. “Under his guidance, the Post has seen significant growth, transforming from near-empty gatherings to meetings filled with veterans, families and community participants who are once again excited to contribute.”
Dummer credits much of the success to It’s Your Ship, as well as the new members who have joined, which he describes as a “snowball effect.”
“Our new members have had great energy showing support for our fellow veterans, helping to grow Post membership,” Dummer said.
When recruiting new members, Dummer takes the time to explain in detail the mission and values of VFW. To reach younger veterans, Dummer recognized he needed to evolve his tactics through social media investment.
“For [younger veterans], we need to have the willingness to adapt,” Dummer said.
According to Dummer, each veteran, old or young, has had their own unique experience.
“I learned through life that everyone has their own story and we should lend a sympathetic ear,” he said. “I never believed in pushing individuals to be VFW members but rather they should be of their own free will, as this would lead to a positive and productive membership.”
The Post continues to see increasing membership in 2026.
