VFW Salutes Air Force for 73 Years of Service

Today we celebrate all who have worn Air Force blue

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On Friday, Sept. 18, the Veterans of Foreign Wars proudly joins together with Americans to celebrate the brave men and women of the U.S. Air Force, and their 73 years of steadfast service to our nation.

For nearly three-quarters of a century, the Air Force’s innovation and drive have positioned the United States as the superior force across air and space.

Originally organized as part of the U.S. Army in 1907, the Air Force became a separate military department on this day when President Harry S. Truman, a VFW Life member signed the National Security Act of 1947.

Today, the members of our Air Force work tireless to ensure America’s defenses are ready at a moment’s notice, offering rapid global support no matter when and where they are needed. Thanks to the service, sacrifice and integrity of those who have worn Air Force blue, our great nation remains the most dominant air, space and cyber force in the world.

Please join the more than 1.5 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary in wishing every past and present American Airman a happy 73rd birthday!
