JAY, Maine — Jarad Greeley, a resident of North Jay, Maine, and a life member from Frank L. Mitchell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3335, is hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise awareness and donations for the homeless veterans in the U.S.
Jarad is an Iraq War veteran who was in Iraq from August 2006 through October 2007 with the 2-505 Parachute Infantry Regiment. After a four-year commitment with the U. S. Army, Jarad decided he wanted to do something for other veterans, so during his 15-month tour, he decided he to hike the Appalachian Trail--from Springer Mountain in Georgia to trails end atop Mount Katahdin in Maine--to raise awareness for homeless veterans.
Helping Greeley with his goal is VFW Post 3335 Past Commander Palmer Hebert--and now VFW Department of Maine’s District-9 Commander--and Lynn Dunton, past Ladies Auxiliary President of VFW Post 3335 and Department of Maine Ladies Auxiliary Senior Vice President for the upcoming year.
While Jarad is on the trail, Hebert and Dunton--along with his parents, Steve and Carolyn Greeley--will be conducting fundraisers, with all monies raised, benefiting homeless veterans.
Jarad departed Mt. Springer in Georgia on March 8 of this year and plans on finishing in early August. (As of July 22, he had made it to Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire.
