VFW DISPATCH – September 2016

h_border

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this is an issue the VFW and VFW National Commander Brian Duffy take very seriously.

A staggering average of 20 veterans commit suicide every day.

Long and multiple deployments have taken an immeasurable toll on our newest generation of veterans. And we know veterans of other generations experience post-war challenges as well. In fact, about 65 percent of all veterans who died by suicide were age 50 or older. Too many veterans, young or old, simply do not seek help.

These are the facts, and we have an obligation to ensure every veteran receives the help he or she needs.

The VFW will continue working to ensure Congress properly funds VA and DOD awareness programs and suicide prevention initiatives, and we urge you to help us remove the stigma associated with seeking help.

Respectfully,

Your VFW Membership Team

VFW 2016 Federal Elections Survey

Time is running out to make your voice heard!

There are 2.2 million service members and 21 million veterans. Including spouses, surviving parents and voting age children, the estimated military/veteran voting bloc exceeds 100 million. However, America’s military/veteran population is politically and ideologically even, according to a CNN/Gallup/USA Today poll taken in 2004, which was the last time two veterans ran for president. With another federal election year upon us, the VFW believes it is important to survey our members to better understand how our community thinks. The 16-question survey runs through Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, so take it today!
