Jesse Youngs and his wife were happy with the house they bought that was built in the 1950s. What they didn’t know was that the pipes were as old as the house and in poor condition.
When roots from a nearby tree broke one of the sewage lines, it backed up into their basement. That’s when the Youngses discovered the pipes were deteriorating. The family had just had their first child and did not have the funds available for the repairs.
Initially, the family was worried about how they would be able to get by after paying to fix the pipes and the damage to their basement. Jesse began researching different types of assistance he was eligible for from his military service and reached out to many different organizations for help.
The VFW was the only organization to respond to his request. The family was quickly put in touch with the VFW National Military Service’s Unmet Needs Program.
Once approved for assistance, the family was provided with a grant to cover their expenses. The entire process was handled in a very timely manner that pleasantly surprised them.
“The individual I had spoken to was great and very professional. They got right to it,” Jesse remembers.
The grant allowed Jesse and his family to repair the bad pipes and start enjoying their home again.
