WASHINGTON, Feb. 16, 2007--The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is saluting the U.S. Congress and the president for passing legislation to increase the remaining 2007 budget for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
H.J. Res. 20 was signed into law yesterday by President Bush to keep the federal government operating through Sept. 30, the end of its fiscal year. The failure of the previous Congress to pass 11 of 13 major funding bills had the VA operating on a continuing resolution at 2006 budget levels.
“The almost $3.6 billion increase to the VA’s 2007 budget is a clear sign that the new 110th Congress and the administration are willing to work together to care for America’s veterans of past, present and future,” said VFW Commander-in-Chief Gary Kurpius, a Vietnam veteran from Anchorage, Alaska.
“Although the funding increase comes five months into the current budget year, it will enable the VA to make a difference in the lives of those who have borne the battle, and that’s what matters the most,” he said.
