New Approach to Helping Vets on Tap at Renovated VFW Post

Oldest VFW Post moving in the right direction!

One of the first things a visitor to VFW Post 1 notices is the beer tap. It's disassembled and discarded, in a pile of junk on the floor.

It's a symbol of the change underway at the nation's oldest Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter, now moving into a building being renovated at 4300 Pecos St. in Denver.

When it opens in the spring, this VFW will no longer have a bar. In its place will be offices and volunteers providing services to veterans of every conflict, but with a particular eye to those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I like to drink beer as much as the next person, but there are so many bars we can go to in the area. We can go to a different bar any time we want that camaraderie," said Izzy Abbass, commander of Post 1. "But the real camaraderie comes from helping each other."
