Ohio Post Helps Fellow VFW Post After Hurricane Sandy
Post offers assistance
December 17, 2012
Hurricane Sandy left a trail of devastation along
the East Coast. New York and New Jersey were hit especially hard. Many buildings,
including VFW Posts, lay wasted in dire need of repair after the hurricane
swept through.
Chagrin Falls, Ohio, VFW Post 12067 Adjutant Bill
O’Donnell wanted to offer assistance. He joined with his county’s Habitat for
Humanity and assembled a crew of 12 volunteers. Many phone calls and emails
later, Bill and the volunteers decided to go to Staten Island and assist VFW Post
9587 in its clean-up efforts.
The Staten Island Post was in desperate need of
repair. O’Donnell’s crew worked tirelessly for six days cleaning and removing
debris from the VFW Post building. The Ohio crew also joined
with other local organizations during their stay, helping with sidewalk lunches
and dinners.
Before departing, O’Donnell presented a check on
behalf of his Post for $750 to Post 9587 Commander John Honjacki.
O’Donnell insists his work isn’t finished yet. He
plans to return in early 2013 to further assist the Post and others in the
immediate neighborhood.
His dedicated work and generosity toward his fellow
VFW members is just one reason why the VFW can claim, “NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS.”
